Two weeks ago, our colleague Paula, asked us, “And, how will you bring all your stuff to Taiwan?” She didn’t know that Rob and I have changed our ways. We used to rent huge trucks and stuff them to the brim. But now, we’ve embraced minimalism, and we’re down to just two trusty suitcases. Let me share our funny adventure from big trucks to the ultimate packing challenge!
The Epic Truck Extravaganza
When we left Belgium for France in 2004, we believed we needed an army to transport all our belongings. Enter the mighty moving truck! It felt like we were embarking on an adventure, trusting our friend Erik to navigate the roads as we packed our lives into that colossal beast. We packed furniture, appliances, piano, and more boxes than we could count. Our motto was simple: if it fits, it ships! It was quite a sight and a journey we’ll always remember.
The Compact Van Chronicles
Fast forward to our move to Gran Canaria in 2015, and we downsized our transportation. Our own van replaced the monster truck, and we quickly realized we needed to be more selective. With limited space, we had to get creative. We meticulously handpicked only the essentials that could fit into our trusty van. It was like a challenging puzzle, carefully arranging 21 boxes to make the most of every cubic inch. We bid farewell to unnecessary possessions, embracing a simpler life on this beautiful island.
The Great Suitcase Exodus
And now, listen up, we’ve reached the epitome of our minimalist evolution: two suitcases! We’ve become experts in the art of traveling light. Each of us is allowed a 20kg suitcase and a small bag as hand luggage. It’s like a fashion-conscious game of Tetris, where we carefully select versatile clothing items and pack them with precision. Who needs a massive moving truck when you can conquer the world with just two suitcases?

The Traveling Cloud: One of the greatest blessings of our time is the cloud. Gone are the days of carrying physical copies of documents or fretting about leaving important files behind. With modern technology, everything we need is safely stored in the virtual realm. Our music, photos, documents, and memories effortlessly travel with us. No extra boxes, no added weight—just the convenience of accessing our digital lives from anywhere in the world.
Our journey from using big moving trucks to only having two suitcases shows how our perspective has evolved over time. We’ve learned that having fewer things can make life more exciting and free. We’ve embraced the idea of being minimalist and the fun of traveling with less stuff.
