And off we went to Taiwan Pride in Taipei on October 28, 2023. Beneath the towering, iconic “101” tower, standing tall at 508 meters, 176,000 people gathered to celebrate, protest, and have fun, embracing the theme “Stand with Diversity.”
Taiwan stands out as a progressive Asian country, having allowed gay marriage since 2019. However, when we speak to Taiwanese gay friends, many still find it hard to be open about their identity with family and at work. It was heartening to see so many people participating in the Pride event, especially because it included groups from other Asian countries (Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, the Philippines, etc.) where LGBTQ+ rights have yet to progress.
It was a colorful, fantastic day, and yes, we still need prides everywhere in the world. In some countries, it’s to fight for basic rights; in others, it’s a day of celebration and a way to let the world know that we want to maintain our equal rights. In Taiwan, this year’s pride was a day where everyone could be the best, most diverse version of themselves.
Happy pride!
