On November 25, 2023, we attended Kaohsiung Pride 2023. Kaohsiung, the second-largest city in Taiwan, is just a short train ride away from Tainan. This year’s theme was “咱來嫁傢酒” – “Let’s get married & have a toast!” The translation might sound a bit unusual, but in Chinese, slogans are often crafted with 4 or 5 characters, creating a story by referring to words that sound similar and using word abbreviations. Designing these slogans is considered an art form.
The theme aimed to celebrate the legalization of gay marriage in Taiwan. However, it also highlighted the ongoing challenges, as many individuals within the LGBTQ+ community still hesitate to marry due to concerns about family, employment, and other factors. Achieving full equality remains a work in progress, as gay marriage has not yet been formally recognized in Taiwan’s civil law.
The event drew an impressive turnout of 40,000 participants, a significant number for a city the size of Kaohsiung. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and friendliness, and the stage featured outstanding performances that added to the overall enjoyment of the pride celebration.
