There’s a certain magic to escaping the crowds. And nowhere is this more true than on the Great Wall of China. While Badaling basks in the spotlight, we sought solitude on the less-traveled Jinshanling section.
Imagine walking along one of the world’s greatest engineering marvels with barely a soul in sight. That was our reality for four blissful hours. This stretch of the wall is a testament to human ingenuity and resilience, a dragon of stone snaking its way across the rugged landscape. Constructed over centuries, it’s a living relic of ancient China, bearing witness to empires rise and fall.
As we hiked, our minds wandered through time, picturing the countless soldiers who once patrolled these heights, defending their homeland. The wind whispered tales of emperors and warriors, their echoes carried on the breeze.
The Jinshanling section is a dream for hikers. It’s challenging enough to feel a sense of accomplishment, yet gentle enough to allow for moments of quiet contemplation. We clambered over crumbling watchtowers, each one a portal to the past. And when we paused to catch our breath, the world seemed to melt away, leaving only the vast expanse of sky and mountain.
It’s a place where history and nature intertwine in perfect harmony. To walk the Great Wall is to connect with something profound, and to do so just the two of us, was an experience beyond words.
Tip
We booked our trip to the great wall with Ricky of The Great Wall Adventures. A private driver picked us up at our hotel in Beijing, drove us to the starting point, picked us up at the end of the hike & drove us back to Beijing, at a reasonable price. Perfect.
