The Hanging Monastery, or Xuankong Si, is a truly extraordinary sight. Perched precariously on a sheer cliff face, this ancient temple seems to defy gravity. Its location, around 75 meters above the ground, is both breathtaking and bewildering.
Built over 1,400 years ago, during the Northern Wei Dynasty, the monastery is a testament to the ingenuity of its creators. How they managed to construct such a complex structure on such an unstable surface is still a marvel. Wooden beams, ingeniously carved and inserted into the cliff face, support the entire building.
What’s equally impressive is the harmony of religions found within its walls. Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism coexist peacefully in the Hanging Monastery, making it a unique place of worship. The temple houses statues and artefacts representing all three religions, creating a fascinating blend of spiritual traditions.
Tip
If you stay in Datong, the Hanging Monastery is easy to reach if you order a Didi Car (in the Alipay app). It’s a 1h30 hour drive & with Didi you end up much cheaper than by booking an excursion.
