We had been dreaming of the vast Mongolian steppe for years, and Huitengxile was the perfect place to make that dream a reality. It was like stepping into a postcard – endless rolling hills, a sky so blue it seemed unreal, and a sense of peace that washed over us (although the omnipresence of modern windmills kept our feet on the ground).
City boys on a horse
One of the highlights was our attempt at horseback riding. In our imagination we already saw memories of famous cowboy movies, like Brokeback Mountain, come alive. Reality was different, Ten minutes in the saddle was quite enough for us city boys!
Ulan Hada Volcano Geological Park
The Ulan Hada Volcano Geological Park was anotherworldly. It felt like walking on another planet. Especially because Chinese people think it looks like a Moon landscape, so they dress up as astronauts.
Nomadic life, a night in a yurt
We spent our night in a traditional yurt, a cozy circular dwelling that offered a unique glimpse into nomadic life (although our yurt was a concrete building & had a private bathroom with a hot shower 😆).
Huanghuagou Grassland Tourist Area
Next day we went to visit the Huanghuagou Grassland Tourist Area. If somewhere in the world you can still find fresh air, it’s definitely over here.
