Everybody had warned us, “Tokyo: Many people”. When we arrived streets looked calm, of course we were not alone, but busy, not so sure. So where were these 37 million people hiding? Where are their cars? Most of them don’t have a car and move around with the extremely efficient & punctual subway.
Shibaya Crossing
This crossing is said to be the most busy crossing in the world. We went there on a quiet moment in the afternoon to check if it’s really busy. Indeed even during a quiet afternoon we weren’t alone. People arrived in flocks, waiting for the traffic lights to turn green, to move on to their destination once the go sign was given.
Asukasa District
The Asukasa district is lively & we liked visiting it around sunset. Bit by bit it got darker & the lights were put on. The day felt finished (although it was only 5pm), and a lively evening started.
Central in the Asakusa District lies the Senso-ji, the city’s oldest temple. Huge & impressive.
Meiji Shrine
Our visit to the Meiji Shrine was like stepping into a serene oasis right in the heart of Tokyo. The shrine and its surrounding park felt worlds apart from the city’s bustling energy. As we walked along the wide, gravel path shaded by towering trees, we were enveloped in the quiet calm of nature. The shrine itself, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, was a masterpiece of simplicity.
Omote-sando
Lined with luxury boutiques, high-end cafes, and architecturally stunning buildings, it felt like the city’s chic runway. But as the rich people were still money to spend in the expensive shops of this street, the only ones present in the shops were the staff.
Architecture
Tokyo has some surprising modern architecture. What do you think about the following building, that houses the Taiwanese Sunny Hills pineapple cake branch of Tokyo.
Tokyo Sky Tree
It’s difficult to find a spot in Tokyo were you can’t see the Tokyo Sky Tree. Standing at a staggering 634 meters, it’s the tallest structure in Japan.
Asahi Sky Room
Instead of going up the Sky Tree, we choose to go for a drink at the Asahi Sky Room, in the building of the head quarters of the Asahi Brewery. The beer was great, and so were the views.
Ueno Zoo
During an afternoon we decided to go to the Ueno Zoo. We’re already more than a year in Asia & we still hadn’t seen a giant panda. The giant pandas are the main attraction of Ueno Zoo.
