Sukhothai and Ayutthaya are two ancient cities in Thailand that hold immense historical and cultural significance. Sukhothai, the capital of the Sukhothai Kingdom, flourished from the 13th to the 15th century, while Ayutthaya served as the capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom from the 14th to the 18th century. Both cities were centers of power and played crucial roles in shaping Thai civilization. When visiting Thailand, Sukhothai & Ayutthaya should be on your must-see list. When driving to Sukhothai we made some interesting stops as well.

We’ve taken many pictures & made a series for each chapter below. If you click on a picture you can see the full picture & scroll through the other picturesAt the bottom of this blog we’ve included the “on the road” pictures

The Giant Tree, Ban Rai

When driving towards Sukhothai, we passed through a small village, Ban Rai, just a small village, with main attraction the Giant Tree (height around 70 meters!).

Hup Pa Tat

Hup Pa Tat is a captivating sinkhole located in Thailand. Formed by the dissolution of limestone over thousands of years, this natural phenomenon creates a remarkable crater-like depression in the ground. The entrance is through a natural tunnel. Fossils of dinosaurs have been discovered within the sinkhole.

Kamphaeng Phet historical park

When visiting Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park, our inner archaeologists came alive again. The town used to be a defence town for the Reigns of Sukhotai & Ayuthaya. A vast area, with of course as absolute highlight, “Wat Chang Rob”. The park is so big, that after walking around for 2 hours, we hoped to find our car back at the entrance, to discover that there were 2 entrances to the park. We looked so pathetic, that a very sympathetic lady of the museum gave us a ride to our car.

Sukothai Historical Park

Welcome to Sukhothai Historical Park. When visiting this place we were transported back in time as we explored the remnants of the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Sukhothai, which flourished from the 13th to the 15th century. The City was so big, that to visit the place it’s best to rent a bike (at 30 bath = 1 EUR a day).
