Next Saturday is election day in Taiwan. On this day, the Taiwanese will choose a new president, vice-president, and 113 members of the Legislative Yuan. The streets of Tainan are filled with publicity of the participating parties.

3 big candidates

Lai Ching-Te, currently vice-president, is the presidency candidate of the DPP (Democratic Progressive Party)  & is leading in the polls. The opposition candidate of the KMT (Kuomingtang) is Hou You-Hi. KMT is a more conservative party. Third big candidate is Ko Wen-Je of the new TPP (Taiwan People’s Party). He is a former mayor of Taipei. The main themes of the elections are economy (how to tackle inflation), the relationship with China & energy. The outcome of the elections will no doubt have a big influence on the future of Taiwan.
